Three Former Police Officers Jailed by ICT Over Ashulia Genocide Case

Tribunal Orders Detention in Crimes Against Humanity Case
The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today ordered the imprisonment of three former police officials in connection with a genocide and crimes against humanity case. The case concerns the brutal killing of six youths during the July–August 2024 mass uprising in Ashulia, followed by an attempt to destroy evidence by setting their bodies on fire. The tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order, officially showing the three former officers as arrested in the case.

Accused Officials and Allegations
The three accused are former Additional Superintendent of Police (Crimes and Operations) Md Abdullahil Kafi, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam, and former Detective Branch Inspector Md Arafat Hossain. According to the prosecution, on August 5, 2024, police personnel allegedly shot and killed six young individuals in Ashulia. Their bodies were placed in a police van, which was subsequently set ablaze in an effort to conceal the crime and portray it as an act of protester violence.

Shocking Details Revealed by Prosecutor
Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam revealed that one of the victims was still alive when the fire was set. He stated that petrol was poured on the vehicle, and the victim was burned alive, making the act even more heinous. The tribunal had earlier set April 15 as the date for producing the accused before the court, following an order issued on April 8.
