Chief Adviser calls for Commonwealth assistance ahead of the upcoming general election
She added that the Commonwealth is finalising plans to send multiple observer teams ahead of the elections.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Monday sought the Commonwealth’s full support for the upcoming general election, scheduled for the first half of February next year.
“We need your support in our democratic transition as well as in the upcoming general election,” he told Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey during a meeting at the state guest house Jamuna.
The chief adviser thanked the secretary-general for her strong interest in Bangladesh’s electoral process and reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, credible, and festive election.
In response, the secretary-general assured him of the Commonwealth’s full backing for both the election and the post-election transition.
“There are vast resources within the Commonwealth—56 countries, including members of the G7 and G20—that Bangladesh can tap into as we strengthen one another,” she noted.
She said she had held discussions with a wide range of stakeholders, including the chief justice, the law adviser, the foreign affairs adviser and the chief election commissioner, adding, “I’m very hopeful about the future of the country.”
She also confirmed that the Commonwealth is preparing to deploy multiple observer teams ahead of the polls.
The two leaders additionally discussed youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, expanding social business initiatives and advancing the three-zero vision to reduce unemployment, carbon emissions, and inequality.
