Bangladesh Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive, Climate-Resilient Economy at ESCAP

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to building an inclusive and climate-resilient economy, despite pressing urban and climate-related challenges.

In a video message at the inaugural session of the 81st ESCAP in Bangkok, Prof Yunus highlighted the country's determination amid climate vulnerability, infrastructure deficits, and social inequality.

The Chief Adviser recalled that the interim government assumed office on August 8, 2024, following a mass student-led uprising, inheriting a fragile economy from the previous regime.

He noted that in eight months, reforms have been initiated to restore financial discipline, reduce inflation to 9.3% in February, and regain investor confidence.

A recent international investment summit hosted in Dhaka witnessed participation from over 400 investors across 50 countries.

Stressing the importance of sustainable development, Prof Yunus emphasized the need for socially inclusive and environmentally sound urban transformation as Bangladesh prepares for LDC graduation.

Highlighting climate change as a major threat, he called for greater global cooperation and climate financing to support adaptation measures, including green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

Prof Yunus underscored Bangladesh’s initiatives in low-cost housing, wetland restoration, and use of green materials to alleviate environmental stress.

He advocated for inclusive development through financial inclusion and urban services, inspired by Bangladesh’s success in microfinance and social business.

The Chief Adviser reiterated the significance of social business models in addressing human and environmental issues without profit motives, promoting solutions across healthcare, clean energy, water, housing, and ICT.

Calling for stronger regional cooperation, he presented the "Three Zero Vision"—zero wealth concentration, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions.
