Bangladesh Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive, Climate-Resilient Economy at ESCAP

  • Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to building an inclusive and climate-resilient economy, despite pressing urban and climate-related challenges.

  • In a video message at the inaugural session of the 81st ESCAP in Bangkok, Prof Yunus highlighted the country's determination amid climate vulnerability, infrastructure deficits, and social inequality.

  • The Chief Adviser recalled that the interim government assumed office on August 8, 2024, following a mass student-led uprising, inheriting a fragile economy from the previous regime.

  • He noted that in eight months, reforms have been initiated to restore financial discipline, reduce inflation to 9.3% in February, and regain investor confidence.

  • A recent international investment summit hosted in Dhaka witnessed participation from over 400 investors across 50 countries.

  • Stressing the importance of sustainable development, Prof Yunus emphasized the need for socially inclusive and environmentally sound urban transformation as Bangladesh prepares for LDC graduation.

  • Highlighting climate change as a major threat, he called for greater global cooperation and climate financing to support adaptation measures, including green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

  • Prof Yunus underscored Bangladesh’s initiatives in low-cost housing, wetland restoration, and use of green materials to alleviate environmental stress.

  • He advocated for inclusive development through financial inclusion and urban services, inspired by Bangladesh’s success in microfinance and social business.

  • The Chief Adviser reiterated the significance of social business models in addressing human and environmental issues without profit motives, promoting solutions across healthcare, clean energy, water, housing, and ICT.

  • Calling for stronger regional cooperation, he presented the "Three Zero Vision"—zero wealth concentration, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions.

  • Prof Yunus urged nations in the Asia-Pacific to empower youth and innovation to drive sustainable change.

  • Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, is leading the Bangladesh delegation at the ESCAP session, which serves as a platform for regional collaboration and progress towards the 2030 Agenda.
