UNESCO representative holds meeting with Information Adviser

UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh Sue Vize met with Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuj Alam at his office in the Secretariat today.

During the meeting, the adviser highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the media sector, according to a press release.

Mahfuj Alam said a decision has been made to form a taskforce to overhaul the newspaper circulation audit system. He also noted that work is in progress to draft an ordinance aimed at safeguarding journalists' rights, which is expected to be issued soon.

He expressed optimism that additional media reform initiatives could be implemented in the coming months.

Addressing concerns about media freedom, Mahfuj asserted that there is currently no government pressure on the press and that news dissemination remains entirely independent.

He added that steps are being taken to develop a code of conduct for newspapers and journalists, in consultation with media organisations and relevant stakeholders.

UNESCO International Consultant Lena Fox also attended the meeting.
