Rizwana urges law enforcement to keep the Sundarbans free of crime

Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today urged law enforcement and stakeholder agencies to work in unison to keep the Sundarbans free from all forms of crime.
She stressed that fragmented or isolated efforts are inadequate to protect this unique ecosystem, according to an official statement.
Her remarks came during a virtual stakeholder consultation held this evening, which focused on the challenges and future prospects of managing the Sundarbans.
Rizwana called for integrated action involving the Forest Department, Navy, RAB, Coast Guard, BGB, Police, and local community patrols to ensure effective protection.
The discussion covered ongoing projects, prevailing issues, and strategies for the future. Among the key threats she identified were livelihood insecurity, forest banditry, deer poaching, plastic waste, forest fires, harmful fishing practices, illegal intrusions, and unauthorised vehicular access.
She stressed the need for a unified, long-term action plan to confront these challenges.
“The Sundarbans is more than just a forest — it’s part of our identity. Its protection is vital for our environment, biodiversity, and the well-being of coastal communities,” she said.
The adviser also noted several active initiatives such as the Tiger Response Team, Dolphin Team, and routine patrol units safeguarding the forest. She called for the swift finalisation of the Eco-Tourism Guideline and the Sundarbans Visit Policy to promote responsible tourism.
The consultation also featured remarks from Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed and Chief Conservator of Forests Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury.
A keynote was presented by Md. Imran Ahmed, Conservator of Forests for the Khulna region, while representatives from the Khulna Divisional Commissioner’s office, RAB, Coast Guard, Navy, local administration, police, Department of Environment, Water Development Board, and Fire Service and Civil Defence also participated.
