A writ petition has been filed challenging the legality of the Bangladesh–US trade agreement
The trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States was signed on 9 February 2026.
A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the reciprocal trade agreement between Bangladesh and the United States, terming it unreasonable, structurally imbalanced, and contrary to national interests.
Supreme Court lawyers Mohammad Maidul Islam Polok and Subir Nandi Das submitted the public interest petition to the relevant High Court branch on Monday (4 May).
The secretaries of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Commerce have been named as respondents.
According to the petition, the agreement fails to safeguard Bangladesh’s economic sovereignty and public welfare and was concluded without adhering to the required constitutional procedures.
It also alleges that the deal creates an unequal tariff regime for Bangladesh, compromises policy-making independence, and may adversely affect domestic industries, agriculture, and the environment.
The agreement was signed on 9 February 2026.
