Bangladesh to Send Two Letters to U.S. on Tariff Policy Within 48 Hours

The Government of Bangladesh has decided to send two formal letters to the United States regarding its newly imposed tariff policy, with plans to dispatch them within the next 48 hours. One letter, from Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, will be addressed directly to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared the development following a high-level meeting held Sunday at the Ministry of Finance, chaired by the finance adviser, according to a report by Bangla Tribune.

As per the meeting’s decision, both letters will request that the current 15% tariff on Bangladeshi exports remain in effect for at least another three months.

Shafiqul Alam confirmed that the second letter will be sent by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

“The letters will highlight the measures Bangladesh has already undertaken to facilitate exports to the U.S., along with future plans to enhance trade and investment opportunities,” the press secretary said.

“Regardless of the wording, the message will clearly reflect our pro-business stance,” he added. “We are committed to protecting Bangladesh’s commercial interests and offering a more business-friendly environment compared to our competitors, aiming to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with the U.S. and expand our market access.”

The meeting was attended by Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, Chief Adviser’s High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman, Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi, BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, former BGMEA presidents Rubana Huq and Faruque Hassan, businessman Tapan Chowdhury, Apex Footwear MD Syed Nasim Manzur, BKMEA Executive President Md Hatem, and senior officials from multiple ministries.
