The government has formed a committee to investigate the last three national elections.

The interim government has formed a five-member committee to investigate allegations surrounding the last three national elections—held in 2014, 2018, and 2024—and to recommend measures for ensuring fair and transparent polls in the future.

The committee is headed by former High Court Justice Shamim Hasnain. Other members include former additional secretary Shamim Al Mamun, Associate Professor of Law at Dhaka University Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan, Barrister Tajriyaan Akram Hussain, and election expert Md Abdul Alim.

According to the official notification, these three elections have faced widespread criticism both domestically and internationally. It cited “serious allegations” that the then-ruling Awami League came to power through manipulated processes that undermined citizens’ voting rights and violated constitutional obligations to uphold representative governance.

The notification further noted concerns that such alleged electoral misconduct has posed threats to the rule of law, democracy, and fundamental human rights in Bangladesh. In light of these concerns, the interim government has tasked the committee with probing corruption, irregularities, and criminal activities during the elections, with the aim of safeguarding democratic values and preventing authoritarian backsliding.

The committee is expected to examine reports from election observers, both domestic and international, as well as civil society and media sources. It will also gather expert opinions on the credibility and integrity of the electoral process. The final report is to be submitted by September 30.
