Prime Minister urges police to maintain peace and ensure public safety across the country.

Tarique Rahman on Sunday urged police personnel to do their utmost to ensure peace and security for the people of the country.

“Ensuring peace and security for the country’s people largely depends on the role of the police. You should make every effort to safeguard people’s lives and property — this is what the government expects from you,” he said.

The prime minister, who also serves as chairman of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Police Week 2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Lines ground in the capital this morning.

Calling on police members to renew their commitment, he said, “Our responsibility does not end with remembrance alone. It is our sacred duty to protect Bangladesh’s independence at any cost, for which our police brothers sacrificed their lives.”

“Let no fascism or autocracy ever again be able to use police members against the independence of Bangladesh and its people. Standing on this soil stained with the blood of police at the very beginning of independence, let us once again pledge ourselves to a new oath,” he added.

Tarique Rahman said that during the turbulent days of March 1971, when political tension was at its peak and thousands of troops were being brought to Dhaka from the then West Pakistan, the reasoning behind the then political leadership’s decision to concentrate all police personnel at Rajarbagh Police Lines remains a subject of research for those studying Bangladesh’s independence and Liberation War.

At the end of his speech, the prime minister congratulated the police and RAB personnel who took part in the parade and wished success for Bangladesh Police Week 2026.

Earlier, he inaugurated the four-day Police Week 2026 with the theme, “Amar Police, Amar Desh, Sobar Agey Bangladesh (My Police, My Country, Bangladesh Comes First).”

The prime minister’s wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, was also present at the অনুষ্ঠানে. Later, the prime minister and his wife visited the stall of the Bangladesh Police Women's Welfare Association.
