As part of preparations for the 13th national parliamentary elections, the Election Commission (EC) this morning began hearings on objections to the re-demarcation of parliamentary constituencies in the Dhaka region, marking the third day of the ongoing process.

The session opened at 10:00 am with hearings on Manikganj-1, 2, and 3, followed by Narsingdi-4 and 5, and Narayanganj-3, 4, and 5. Proceedings are scheduled to continue until 12:30 pm at the EC Building auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin is presiding over the hearings, joined by Election Commissioners and the EC Secretariat Secretary. Additional hearings for Dhaka-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 19 constituencies will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Applicants and their lawyers are presenting arguments and objections before the commission, which has assured that the process will be conducted impartially in line with legal provisions.

On August 27, hearings will continue for Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Faridpur, and Sylhet regions. From 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, cases for Panchagarh-1, 2, Rangpur-1, Kurigram-4, Sirajganj-2, 5, 6, and Pabna-1 will be reviewed. The afternoon session, from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm, will cover Tangail-6, Jamalpur-2, Kishoreganj-1, Sylhet-1, Faridpur-1, 4, Madaripur-2, 3, and Shariatpur-2 and 3.

The EC’s legal wing will later brief on the rulings.

Up to August 10, a total of 1,760 claims and objections concerning 83 constituencies had been submitted. The EC will resolve these before finalizing and publishing the revised constituency boundaries.
