Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today inaugurated a daylong national workshop on higher education at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of University of Dhaka.

The workshop, titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence,” was formally opened by the premier at 11:00am.

Organised by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, the workshop aims to make the country’s higher education system more modern, inclusive and sustainable.

The Prime Minister arrived at the venue at 9:55am, while the programme began with recitations from religious scriptures.

On the occasion, UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed presented a crest to the Prime Minister.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Education, Dr Mahdi Amin, addressed the inaugural session as special guests, with UGC Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed presiding over the event.

The programme was attended by government policymakers, UGC members, vice-chancellors of public and private universities, teachers, researchers, diplomats, representatives from industries, and development partners.

Five technical sessions are scheduled to be held as part of the workshop.

The sessions will cover issues including graduate employability, soft skills and demand-driven education, industry-academia collaboration and global competitiveness, digital transformation and AI integration, teachers’ skill development, research excellence and internationalisation, as well as governance, quality assurance and institutional reform.

According to the UGC, recommendations and opinions gathered from participants will help formulate an actionable policy roadmap for the advancement of higher education in Bangladesh.

The commission said the workshop is expected to contribute significantly to improving the quality of higher education and developing internationally competitive skilled human resources, while also supporting the government’s future policy planning for the sector.
