Osman Hadi shooting will not impact election process: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Monday said the recent shooting of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson and Dhaka-8 parliamentary aspirant Sharif Osman Hadi would not affect the forthcoming national election, terming the incident an isolated case.

Addressing a programme in Dhaka on Monday morning, the CEC said sporadic incidents of violence do occur and should not be seen as influencing the electoral process. “From time to time, one or two incidents happen. The attack on Osman Hadi is an isolated incident and will not impact the election,” he said. Dismissing concerns about the polls, Nasir Uddin said the Election Commission is fully prepared and committed to holding the election with the participation of all stakeholders. “There is no cause for concern. The EC is fully ready and will proceed with the election by engaging everyone,” he added.

On the overall situation in the country, the CEC said law and order conditions are much improved compared to 2024. “At that time, people could not sleep peacefully. Now they are sleeping in peace,” he said, adding that law enforcement agencies are fully prepared and that a free and fair election will be held on schedule. Emphasising the role of youth, Nasir Uddin said the vision of a ‘new Bangladesh’ rests on young people, noting their decisive role at critical moments in the nation’s history, including 1969, 1971 and 2024.

He also said the upcoming election would be historic, as postal voting would be introduced and a referendum held alongside it. Active participation by young people, he added, would help the Election Commission ensure a free, fair and credible election.
