Military Promotions Must Remain Free of Political Influence: PM Tarique Rahman

PM Tarique Rahman: Army promotions to be based solely on merit, not politics

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday said promotions in the Bangladesh Army must be determined solely by merit and professional competence, with no room for personal or political influence.

Addressing the inauguration of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026, the premier described promotions as a critical institutional process that must be guided by professionalism, integrity and fairness.

He said the evaluation of eligible officers should be based on professional competence, leadership, discipline, integrity, trustworthiness, loyalty and overall performance, emphasizing that personal or political considerations have no place in the process.

The prime minister also commended the Bangladesh Army for its role in protecting the country's independence and sovereignty, maintaining internal law and order, ensuring national stability, and supporting civil authorities during natural disasters and other emergencies. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff and all members of the armed forces for their dedicated service to the nation.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was welcomed at the Army Headquarters by the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of General Staff (CGS).

During the event, the Army Chief thanked the prime minister for attending the inauguration despite his busy schedule, saying his presence would inspire members of the armed forces.
