Jamaat chief says referendum must be held before national election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has called for a national referendum to be held before the upcoming parliamentary election.

Addressing a rally of eight political parties in the capital’s Paltan area on Tuesday, he said, “The July Revolution must be acknowledged. Those who refuse to recognise it should not expect an election in 2026. To hold the 2026 election, recognition of the July Revolution is essential — and for that, the July Charter must be granted legal status.”

Shafiqur Rahman emphasised that no election could take place without this legal foundation. “The people of this country have one united demand — a referendum must be held before the national election. All parties have agreed to this, so why the delay in setting the date? Since everyone has signed in agreement, holding the referendum first is only logical,” he said.

He added that such a referendum would provide the legal basis for the next parliamentary election, ensuring it is held without doubt or controversy.

“We want the national election to be held in February, before Ramadan,” the Jamaat chief said, urging all parties to avoid creating confusion or unnecessary disputes over the issue.
