A foreign vessel carrying a substantial shipment of octane has arrived at Chittagong Port, bolstering the country’s fuel reserves amid steady demand.

The Hong Kong-flagged vessel Quichi, laden with 26,000 tonnes of octane imported from Malaysia, reached the port’s outer anchorage on Thursday morning. It is the third octane consignment to arrive in the country this month.

According to its local agent, Pride Shipping Line, unloading operations are set to commence from noon.

Earlier, two other vessels carrying 26,000 tonnes and 27,000 tonnes of octane arrived at the port on April 8 and April 17, respectively. With the latest delivery, total octane imports for the month have risen to 79,000 tonnes. Officials noted that with an estimated daily demand of around 1,200 tonnes, the current stock is sufficient to meet national needs for more than two months, easing pressure on fuel supplies.

Nazrul Islam, owner of Pride Shipping Line, said five more vessels carrying octane and diesel are currently waiting at the outer anchorage for clearance. He added that three ships berthed on Wednesday and have already begun unloading fuel.

However, port operations are experiencing some limitations. With only three dolphin jetties available, all vessels cannot be accommodated at once. Additionally, unfavorable weather conditions are intermittently disrupting cargo handling activities.
