Ruhul Kabir Rizvi underscored the significance of protecting independence and sovereignty while upholding a multi-party democracy during a meeting with former military officials at the BNP's central office in Naya Paltan on Saturday.

He stressed the need to prioritize these two issues, pointing out, “We must move forward with these two priorities in mind. People are being killed at the border every day.”

Rizvi criticized Sheikh Hasina for her perceived passivity, claiming she has lacked the courage to protest against the violence occurring at the border.

“Those who have advocated for democracy in their own country have either been confined to a mirror room or spent years in prison,” he remarked.

Commenting on the political behavior of judges under authoritarian rule, Rizvi stated it is often difficult to discern whether former Justice Shamsuddin Manik is a member of the Awami League presidium or a Supreme Court judge.

“We see no difference in him,” he added.

He emphasized the necessity of ensuring judicial independence, asserting, “To strengthen democracy, the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary are essential. The judiciary is the last refuge for the people.”

The meeting also included retired Brigadier General Zahurul Haque, Colonel Touhid Pathan, Colonel Abdul Haque, and Lieutenant Colonel Hasinul Rahman, among others.
