Canada's Prime Minister Trudeau may announce his resignation as soon as Monday, according to a report by the Globe and Mail
It is uncertain whether Trudeau will step down immediately or continue as prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation as Liberal Party Leader as early as Monday, according to a report by The Globe and Mail on Sunday, which cited three unnamed sources.
The sources indicated they are uncertain about the exact timing of Trudeau’s announcement but expect it to occur before a critical national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday. The Prime Minister's Office has not responded to requests for comment outside regular business hours. It is also unclear whether Trudeau plans to step down immediately or remain in office until a new leader is chosen, the report stated.
Trudeau assumed leadership of the Liberal Party in 2013, at a time when the party was struggling and had fallen to third place in the House of Commons for the first time. His potential departure could leave the party without a permanent leader during a period when polls suggest the Liberals face a significant defeat to the Conservatives in an election that must occur by late October.
Trudeau’s resignation is expected to prompt calls for a swift election to establish a government capable of managing relations with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump over the next four years.
According to one source, Trudeau has discussed the possibility of Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc stepping in as interim leader and prime minister. However, the source noted this arrangement may be impractical if LeBlanc intends to run for the party’s leadership.
