National Film Award-winning actor Prabir Mitra passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday at 10:15 pm while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

His son, Sifat Islam, confirmed the news to the media.

Prabir Mitra had been admitted to a private hospital on December 22 due to multiple health complications. Over the past two weeks, his condition worsened, prompting his family to seek government support for advanced medical care.

Born on August 18, 1941, in Chandpur, Prabir Mitra was the son of Gopendra Nayaran Mitra and Omiabala Mitra. He began stage acting while in class 7 and later completed his education at Jagannath College (now Jagannath University). He also attended the Institute of Statistical Research and Training at Dhaka University.

Mitra made his film debut with Jolchhobi, directed by H Akbar, and went on to act in over 400 films during his illustrious career.

In 1982, he won his first National Film Award as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo. His performance in Nawab Sirajuddaula (1989) also received widespread acclaim.

Some of his notable films include Mayer Dabi, Dulari, Biyer Phul, Akash Chowa Bhalobasha, Madhumita, Dohon, Bhalobashlei Ghor Badha Jay Na, Talak, Maan Shomman, Rani Keno Dakat, and Nawab Sirajuddaula.

His final film appearance was in Briddhashram, directed by SD Rubel.
