This May Be My Last Election: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the upcoming national election could be his last.

Mirza Fakhrul, who has been nominated by the BNP to contest from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency, made the remarks in a Facebook post on Monday afternoon, shortly after the party unveiled its list of probable candidates.

During a press conference announcing the list, he confirmed his own candidacy, stating, “In Thakurgaon-1, it’s me.”

Expressing his gratitude to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman for nominating him, Fakhrul also thanked party leaders and activists for their continued support throughout his political journey.

“By the grace of Almighty Allah, BNP has nominated me for Thakurgaon-1. I thank Begum Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman, and all leaders for their trust. To all party activists, thank you for standing by me throughout my life,” he wrote.

In the same post, he added, “This election may be my last. Those who did not receive nominations, please have faith — the party will surely entrust you with due responsibility and respect in time. Pray for me and for all our leaders and workers.”

Reflecting on his decades-long political career, Fakhrul recalled the personal sacrifices he and many others had made for politics.

“Those of us who have dedicated our lives to politics — gone to jail, faced struggles — all have our own untold stories. I remember when I decided to return to politics in 1987, my daughters were very young, and my wife was shocked. She understood the uncertainty of the path we were taking,” he wrote, sharing memories from his early political years.

Fakhrul added that thousands of BNP leaders and activists share similar stories of sacrifice and dedication, reflecting their lifelong commitment to the party and the nation.
