South Korea kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday, finally turning their dominance into goals after squandering numerous chances throughout the match.

For much of the game, it appeared the Koreans might pay the price for their wastefulness in front of goal. However, substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu struck the winner in the 80th minute to secure all three points at a sparsely attended stadium in Guadalajara.

Led by Son Heung-min, South Korea controlled the first half but failed to break the deadlock. Son came close on several occasions, first firing over the bar before producing a surging run past two defenders, only to see his shot drift wide.

The second half started dramatically as the Czech Republic took the lead against the run of play. Ladislav Krejci met a corner at the near post and powered a header beyond goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu.

South Korea's persistent pressure finally paid off in the 67th minute when Hwang In-beom equalized with a composed finish, cleverly disguising his shot before lifting the ball over Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

The Czechs thought they had regained the lead, but a goal was ruled out. Hwang then turned provider, delivering a cross from the right that Oh calmly converted to put South Korea ahead.

At the final whistle, following a tense finish, Son dropped to the ground in celebration as South Korea secured a valuable opening win.

South Korea will next face co-hosts Mexico, who defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening Group A match earlier on Thursday, on June 18. The Czech Republic will take on South Africa the same day in Atlanta.
