From Factory Floors to the World Cup: Germany’s Super-Sub Deniz Undav

Deniz Undav’s journey from factory worker to World Cup star has become one of the most inspiring stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the striker playing a key role in Germany’s progress to the knockout rounds.

The 29-year-old forward struck twice in Germany’s 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast, raising his tournament tally to three goals and two assists despite featuring only twice as a substitute. Undav’s path to the top was far from easy. Released by Werder Bremen at 14, he spent years balancing semi-professional football with factory work in Germany’s lower leagues. At 17, he earned just £120 a week and worked eight-hour shifts operating industrial machinery before heading to training sessions in the evening.

His career took off in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise, where he helped the club win promotion and later scored 25 goals in the top division. Undav’s resurgence has also come after overcoming tensions with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who had previously criticised him over comments regarding his international ambitions. The relationship appears to have improved significantly, with Nagelsmann now openly praising the striker’s game-changing influence.

“Why should I ruin his flow?” Nagelsmann said after the win over Ivory Coast. “He came in twice and scored twice.”

Having netted nine goals in just 11 appearances for Germany, Undav is now mounting a strong challenge for a place in the starting lineup ahead of the team’s final group-stage clash against Ecuador. Nagelsmann has indicated he is considering alterations to his team, and the striker’s performances have strengthened his case.
