The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today overturned a previous High Court ruling that had upheld a 13-year prison sentence for BNP leader Amanullah Aman and a three-year sentence for his wife, Sabera Aman, in a corruption case. A three-member bench of the apex court, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, delivered the verdict, stating, "Appeal is allowed. The judgment and order passed by the High Court Division is set aside."

Senior Advocate AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Sakib Mahmud represented Aman and his wife, while Senior Advocate Asif Hasan appeared on behalf of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Following the verdict, the defence noted that there is no longer any legal obstacle preventing Aman from contesting in the upcoming general elections.

The ACC had filed the case on March 6, 2007, at Kafrul Police Station in Dhaka, accusing the couple of illegally amassing wealth and hiding information in their asset declarations. On June 21, 2007, Dhaka’s Special Judge's Court found them guilty—sentencing Aman to 13 years and Sabera to three years in prison. Although the High Court acquitted them on August 16, 2010, a fresh hearing was ordered by the Supreme Court. Following that hearing, on May 30, 2023, the High Court reinstated the lower court's original judgment. Today’s Supreme Court ruling nullifies that decision.
