The National Consensus Commission has informed political parties that individuals serving as party chiefs will be ineligible to assume the role of Prime Minister.

Parties that disagree with the decision may include a formal “note of dissent” in the national charter.

The announcement was made by Commission Vice Chairman Professor Ali Riaz on Tuesday, at the start of the 17th day of party consultations held at the Foreign Service Academy.

According to Riaz, most parties agreed that the Prime Minister should not simultaneously hold the position of party chief, though some voiced opposition.

Among those dissenting were the BNP, LDP, Labour Party, NDM, the 12-Party Alliance, the Nationalist Alliance, and Am Janatar Dal, who support the idea of a single individual serving as party chief, Prime Minister, and leader of the House.

On the other hand, a majority of parties—including Jamaat and the Nationalist Constitutional Party (NCP)—opposed such concentration of power.

The matter has been the focus of intense debate across several sessions.
