Pakistan dismisses over 100 police officers for refusing duty in Champions Trophy 2025 security preparations: Report

In an unprecedented development, over 100 Pakistani police personnel were dismissed for refusing to perform security duties during the Champions Trophy 2025, a day after a high alert was issued regarding threats to foreign nationals traveling for the tournament, according to news agency PTI.

The dismissed officers, affiliated with various wings of Punjab Police, reportedly either remained absent from duty multiple times or outright refused to take on their assigned responsibilities during Pakistan’s first ICC tournament since 1996. Many of them were tasked with providing security for teams traveling between Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and designated hotels but failed to fulfill their duties.

Punjab Police Inspector General (IGP) Usman Anwar took notice of the issue and ordered strict action, emphasizing that there is no tolerance for negligence in ensuring security at international events.

While no official reason has been provided for the mass refusal, local media reports suggest that the dismissed officers were overwhelmed by long working hours.

Meanwhile, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has dismissed concerns about potential terror threats to the tournament. Speaking to Geo News, he stated, “Pakistan is hosting the ICC Champions Trophy peacefully and efficiently. Our stadiums are packed, fans from around the world are celebrating, and the atmosphere is vibrant with cricket fever.”

Pakistan’s national team has already been eliminated from the tournament following heavy defeats against New Zealand and India.
