The body of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi was transferred from the mortuary of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The transfer took place around 9:40am on Saturday (20 December) under tight security, with personnel from the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police deployed.

Hospital sources said the autopsy is expected to be completed by late morning, after which the body will be washed and taken to the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza will be held at 2:00pm.

Following the funeral prayers, and in line with his family’s wishes, Hadi will be buried beside the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at the University of Dhaka.

The government is observing a day of state mourning on Saturday in response to Hadi’s death. National flags are being flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, and Bangladeshi missions abroad.

Hadi sustained critical injuries in a shooting incident in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar on 12 February. He was first treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being shifted to Evercare Hospital, and later taken to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died while undergoing care.

His body arrived in Dhaka on Friday evening on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Singapore.
