Only an elected government can truly address Bangladesh’s challenges, says Amir Khasru.

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the many challenges Bangladesh is currently facing can only be addressed by an elected government operating through proper parliamentary processes.

He stressed that an unelected authority cannot tackle such deep-rooted national problems.

Speaking to reporters on Friday afternoon after inaugurating the MVT Summit at a hotel in Chattogram, he said, “Right now, the people of Bangladesh have just one demand: an elected government chosen through their voting rights,” adding that diverting attention to minor issues would only waste time.

Khasru said that reinstating democratic governance and returning state authority to the people—by allowing them to elect their representatives—would open the way to resolving the country’s existing crises.

On the 17 November verdict against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has already been convicted of crimes against humanity in absentia, he said any situation that emerges must be managed by the government and law enforcement agencies.

“This is not the responsibility of any political party,” he added, stressing the need for Bangladesh to move beyond such political practices.
