Prime Minister’s Adviser and spokesperson Mahdi Amin has said Bangladesh and China have agreed to expand cooperation on the Teesta Master Plan, river management and flood risk reduction in Bangladesh.

The consensus was reached during a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Chinese Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying on Thursday, he said.

According to Mahdi Amin, the Chinese minister expressed strong interest in working closely with Bangladesh in these areas and offered support for research, training and institutional capacity building.

He made the remarks at a press briefing held at Beijing’s Diaoyutai Hotel at 1:00pm local time (11:00am Bangladesh time) on Thursday to update the media on the prime minister’s ongoing visit to China.

Mahdi Amin also said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held a party-to-party meeting with Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing earlier in the day.

During the meeting, the prime minister called for a stronger Bangladesh-China partnership focused on long-term economic cooperation, sustainable growth and shared prosperity. The Chinese side reaffirmed its commitment to deepening political, economic and people-to-people relations and reiterated support for Bangladesh’s sovereignty, security and development.

Both sides expressed their determination to take bilateral relations to a new height through enhanced cooperation in development, investment, people-to-people connectivity and inter-party engagement.

An MoU was also signed between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Communist Party of China during the meeting.
