Hafiz Uddin, Kayser Kamal elected Speaker and Deputy Speaker
Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, a Standing Committee member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and Kayser Kamal have been elected as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 13th Parliament.
The House later unanimously elected them as Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Earlier, Leader of the House Tarique Rahman nominated five-time BNP lawmaker Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain to preside over the inaugural sitting of the 13th Parliament for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Following the election, the House adjourned its sitting for 30 minutes at around 11:50am.
Veteran BNP leader and valiant freedom fighter Hafiz Uddin Ahmad represents the Bhola-3 constituency, while Kayser Kamal is the MP from Netrakona-1 and serves as the party’s law affairs secretary.
Hafiz also holds the post of minister for liberation war affairs, while Kayser serves as state minister for land.
Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni proposed Hafiz’s name for the Speaker’s post, which was seconded by ruling party whip Rakibul Islam, MP from Khulna-3.
Meanwhile, whip Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu proposed Kayser Kamal’s name for the post of Deputy Speaker, and the motion was seconded by another whip, ABM Ashraf Uddin.
Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the presence of Tarique Rahman and other lawmakers.
Hafiz was first elected to parliament in 1986 from Bhola as a candidate of the Jatiya Party and was re-elected in 1988. He later won the fifth parliamentary election as an independent candidate.
After joining the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, he was elected to parliament for three consecutive terms up to the eighth parliament in 2001.
During the previous BNP government, he served as minister of water resources and later as commerce minister following a cabinet reshuffle.
A retired major of the Bangladesh Army, Hafiz Uddin became a member of the BNP standing committee in 2024.
A six-term MP, he also comes from a political family. His father, Dr Azharuddin, was a member of the National Council of East Pakistan from Bhola.
Hafiz completed his master’s degree in political science from University of Dhaka in 1968.
