Eminent Writer And Leftist Intellectual Badruddin Umar Passes Away

Badruddin Umar, noted writer, researcher and prominent leftist intellectual, passed away this morning at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka due to complications of old age. He was 94.
In a statement, the Jatiya Mukti Council said, “Umar breathed his last at 10:05 am today after a prolonged struggle with age-related complications.”
Umar began his academic journey as a part-time lecturer at Dhaka University and later founded the Department of Sociology at Rajshahi University.
He went on to serve as president of the Bangladesh Krishok Federation and as central coordinator of the Gonotantrik Biplobi Jote.
A lifelong Marxist thinker, Umar was once a member of the central committee of the Purba Banglar Communist Party.
In 2003, he founded the Jatiya Mukti Council, where he remained president until his passing.
