CA Urges Swift Deal with Foreign Investors to Boost Ctg Port Capacity

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday instructed authorities to expedite negotiations with potential foreign investors to enhance the capacity of Chattogram port and deliver world-class services to users.

He issued the directives during a high-level meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna with officials from the Ministry of Shipping, BIDA, BEZA, CPA, and other relevant bodies.

Yunus emphasized that efficient operators must be engaged in port management to make Bangladesh’s ports globally competitive. “We have to make our ports world-class to establish the investment hub we are talking about,” he said.

BIDA and BEZA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun noted that the current seaport handling capacity of 1.37 million units per year can rise to 7.86 million within five years through strategic planning.

He highlighted that the New Mooring Container Terminal has a current capacity of 1.27 million units, and Mongla Port, 0.1 million. These can be raised to 1.5 million and 0.63 million units respectively.

He also informed the Chief Adviser about the progress of key infrastructure projects, including Patenga Container Terminal, Laldia Terminal, Bay Terminal, and Matarbari Deep Sea Port, which together could raise national handling capacity to over five million units.

Prof Yunus called for all agencies to complete their tasks by August with close coordination.

The meeting was attended by Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain, Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi, Shipping Senior Secretary Mohammed Yousuf, CEO of the PPP Authority Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, and CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, among others.
