Bangladesh elected as Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission.

Bangladesh has been elected Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for 2026.

The election to the five-member bureau of the PBC was held on Thursday at the UN Headquarters in New York, according to a message received here this morning.

Bangladesh formally assumed the Vice-Chair role during the first meeting of the Commission’s 20th session following a brief ceremony.

In a statement, the Bangladesh delegation expressed gratitude to Commission members for their trust and confidence, reaffirming the country’s commitment to the UN’s peacebuilding mandate, ongoing activities, and future initiatives.

At the Commission’s inaugural meeting of the 20th session, Morocco was elected Chair, while Germany, Brazil, Croatia and Bangladesh were chosen as Vice-Chairs.

The President of the UN General Assembly and the Chef de Cabinet, representing the Secretary-General, attended the meeting and delivered statements highlighting the importance of the PBC’s role.

The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected countries.

It comprises 31 member states drawn from the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the UN’s leading troop- and financial-contributing countries.

Bangladesh has been a member of the Commission since its establishment in 2005. It previously served as Chair in 2012 and as Vice-Chair in 2013 and 2023.
