Bangladesh-China Relations Enter a New Phase: Prof. Muhammad Yunus
Professor Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's interim government, expressed optimism about increasing Chinese investment in Bangladesh, fostering a broader market alongside local partners.
"It is crucial that we view China as a close ally," Prof. Yunus remarked, highlighting the strong and longstanding ties between the two nations. "Our trade relationship is robust, and we greatly benefit from our collaboration with China," he added.
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua, Prof. Yunus stated that he anticipates Bangladesh-China relations to reach a new stage.
"The people of Bangladesh are inspired by China's remarkable achievements," he said, emphasizing that the interim government is focused on rebuilding a new Bangladesh. He expressed hope that Bangladesh could learn from China's development model to accelerate its own progress.
Speaking on China's success in poverty alleviation, Prof. Yunus noted that while most countries prioritize GDP growth, China has concentrated on uplifting low-income groups. "This focus has enabled China to reduce poverty at an unprecedented rate," he observed.
Trade and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and China have advanced significantly in recent years. China has remained Bangladesh’s largest trading partner for 15 consecutive years. Currently, nearly 1,000 Chinese enterprises operate in Bangladesh, generating over 550,000 jobs.
Prof. Yunus underscored the extensive cooperation between the two countries, which has yielded numerous positive outcomes. "Bangladesh’s imports from China continue to grow, with a substantial portion of our industrial-use products sourced from China," he noted.
Looking ahead, he emphasized the strong economic complementarities and vast cooperation potential between the two nations. He reiterated his hope that more Chinese investors would establish businesses in Bangladesh, expanding market opportunities in collaboration with local partners.
Recently, the first group of Bangladeshi patients, doctors, and travel agencies visited Kunming, China’s Yunnan Province, for medical check-ups and treatment, marking a step toward developing the medical tourism sector. Prof. Yunus suggested that Bangladesh could learn from China’s healthcare advancements to build a better medical system for its people.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh and is also recognized as the China-Bangladesh Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
Referencing historical ties, Prof. Yunus highlighted the journeys of Chinese Monk Xuanzang to Bangladesh and Bangladeshi scholar Atisha Dipankar’s contributions to Buddhism in China. These deep-rooted connections, he noted, have laid a strong foundation for the sustained development of bilateral relations.
"Bangladesh greatly benefits from its collaboration with China. Together, we can create not just a rapidly growing economy, but an inclusive one where everyone participates," he asserted.
Looking forward, he expressed confidence in expanding cooperation beyond economic matters to cultural exchanges. "The past 50 years of Bangladesh-China relations have been remarkable, and the next 50 years will be even more exciting," he stated.
Prof. Yunus concluded by emphasizing the need for broader collaboration. "We aim to share ideas, work together, and achieve our mutual aspirations," he affirmed.
