Narail journalist receives threats over report
A journalist from Narail has filed a general diary after receiving death threats and verbal abuse following the publication of a report on vandalism at Narail Government Victoria College. Md Raju Sheikh, Prothom Alo's correspondent in Narail, lodged the report at Narail Sadar Police Station around 10:00 PM on Monday, as confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Sajedul Islam. Raju expressed his concern over the report, which covered the destruction of a memorial and mural at the college on January 25.
After gathering statements from all relevant parties, Raju published the story on Prothom Alo’s website at 10:30 PM. Shortly after, at around 11:25 PM, he received a call from an unknown number where he was verbally abused and threatened with false criminal charges if he continued reporting on such incidents. "I became a target simply for doing my job. My family and I are now living in fear. I urge the authorities to find and bring the perpetrators to justice," Raju said.
OC Sajedul Islam assured that the investigation is underway and that necessary actions will be taken to ensure justice.
The incident has ignited anger among journalists in Narail, who have expressed collective concern. They believe the threat is not just aimed at one journalist but represents an attack on the entire media community, emphasizing that such actions undermine the principles of free journalism.
