A Dhaka court has placed former lawmaker Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman on a five-day remand in connection with an attempted murder case involving Jubo Dal leader Hridoy Mia. The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain on Tuesday.

Earlier, the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Abdul Halim from Mirpur model police station, had requested a 10-day remand for Suman. The defence lawyer sought bail and appealed for the remand to be canceled, but the prosecution supported the request. After hearing both sides, the judge granted a five-day remand.

According to the case, on July 19, during recent student protests, Hridoy participated in a rally at Mirpur-10 after Jummah prayers. Allegedly, Awami League leaders and activists attacked the rally, using crude bombs and gunfire, injuring Hridoy.

Hridoy, the senior vice president of Jubo Dal's Chhatiain union in Madhabpur, Habiganj, filed a case on September 23, naming Suman as the third accused. Police arrested Suman early Tuesday morning in Mirpur. Shortly before his arrest, at around 1:15 am, Suman posted on his verified Facebook account, stating he was “going with the police” and asking for prayers.

In the 12th general election in January, Suman, a Supreme Court lawyer, sought the Awami League’s nomination but did not receive it. He later won independently from Habiganj-4, defeating the Awami League's candidate, former state minister Md Mahbub Ali.
