Author Taslima Nasreen claims that the Bangladesh military is targeting the Hindu community
Violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has escalated since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country.
On Wednesday, author Taslima Nasreen shared videos on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), claiming that the army and police were attacking Hindus in the Hazari Lane area of Chittagong, Bangladesh. She pointed out that violence against Hindus has been increasing since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country. Hindus, who constitute about 8% of Bangladesh's 170 million population, have traditionally supported Hasina's Awami League party, and their support sparked public anger following violent clashes between anti-quota protesters and security forces last month.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reports that at least 52 of the country’s 64 districts have been affected by communal violence since August 5. The council has called for assistance from Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has assumed leadership of the caretaker government. They noted the widespread fear and uncertainty among minorities across Bangladesh.
The office of the United Nations Secretary-General has urged for an end to the violence in Bangladesh, stressing its opposition to "racially based attacks" and "incitement to violence."
In addition, US presidential candidate Donald Trump condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. "I strongly condemn the barbaric violence against Hindus, Christians, and other minorities who are being attacked and looted by mobs in Bangladesh, which remains in a total state of chaos," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
This marks the first time Trump has publicly addressed the situation in Bangladesh.
