Social Welfare and Women and Children Affairs Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid today said that the youth of 2024 are the true successors of the martyrs of 1971, continuing their legacy and transforming the nation’s course.

“Both the youth of 1971 and 2024 have been inspired by the same ideals of equality, human dignity, and the vision of an enlightened society. To build a society rooted in equality and democracy, we must constantly remember the selfless contributions of the youth of July,” she said.

She made these remarks while addressing the unveiling ceremony of the commemorative volume July: Self-Sacrifice of the Media and the July Dialogue event, organized by Mukto Ganamadhyam Manch at the Bishwo Sahitya Kendra auditorium in the capital.

Paying tribute to the martyrs, Sharmeen said, “You will live on in millions of lives. Building the Bangladesh of the future, establishing an equitable society, and eradicating injustice require the united efforts of journalists, political leaders, and young citizens.”

Highlighting the vital role of journalists in upholding the spirit of July, she added, “Those who are the conscience of the nation can also be the architects of its future. Through their writings, the nation must progress so that the sacrifices of the martyred journalists are not forgotten.”

The event, chaired by Mukto Ganamadhyam Manch spokesperson Mohammad Abdullah Majumder, was also addressed by July Shaheed Smrity Foundation CEO Lieutenant Colonel (Retd.) Kamal Akbar, Jamaat-e-Islami Central Working Committee member Dr. Helal Uddin, and NCP Joint Secretary Faridul Haque.

Shamsi Ara Zaman, mother of martyred journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo, attended the programme on behalf of the families of martyred journalists.
