Jatiya Nagorik Party Announces 153-Member Committee with Key Student Activists

The youth-led Jatiya Nagorik Party has unveiled its 153-member committee, featuring 10 prominent student activists who played pivotal roles in the anti-discrimination movement that led to the fall of the Awami League government.

The official announcement was made on Friday afternoon at a grand rally held on Manik Mia Avenue, in front of the National Parliament Building in Dhaka.

Key Appointments in the Newly Formed Committee

Convener: Md Nahid Islam

  • Md Nahid Islam, a former adviser to the interim government, has been appointed as the convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party.
  • He was introduced as the "Imam" of the July uprising before being called to the stage at the party’s formation rally.
  • A key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM), he played a crucial role in the 2024 anti-quota movement.
  • His activism dates back to the 2018 quota reform protests, and he has been associated with various student bodies, including Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti.
  • Previously, he served as an adviser to the Interim Government of Bangladesh (appointed on August 8, 2024) and later as an adviser to the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology (August 9, 2024) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (August 16, 2024).
  • He resigned from his advisory position on February 25, 2025, to join the Jatiya Nagorik Party.
  • Recognized in Time Magazine's prestigious "TIME100 Next 2024" list.
  • Born in 1998 in Fakirkhali near Dhaka, he completed his SSC from Dakkhin Banasree Model High School (2014) and HSC from Government Science College (2016). He pursued his bachelor's in sociology at Dhaka University (graduated in 2022) and is currently completing his master’s degree.

Senior Joint Conveners: Samanta Sharmin & Ariful Islam Adib

  • Samanta Sharmin was the spokesperson for the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, formed by student leaders of the July revolution. She was previously involved in movements under the banner of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation.
  • Ariful Islam Adib was the general secretary of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad and served as the coordinator for the Anti-Fascist Students' Solidarity in 2023, a coalition of 16 student organizations.
  • Adib was also a member of the Liaison Committee of SAD.
  • Professionally, he worked as a freelance writer for national newspapers (2016–2019) and has been a broadcast and multimedia journalist since 2020.

Member Secretary: Akhtar Hossain

  • Akhtar Hossain, a law graduate from Dhaka University, has been appointed as the party’s member secretary.
  • Gained prominence in 2015 for staging a solo hunger strike against question leaks in university admission tests.
  • A leader in the 2018 quota reform movement, he was elected social services secretary in the 2019 DUCSU elections.
  • He founded Ganatantrik Chhatra Shakti, which led the quota reformation movement alongside Nahid Islam and other key activists.

Senior Joint Member Secretaries: Tasnim Jara & Nahida Sarwar

  • Both were active members of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, which emerged from the July uprising.
  • Tasnim Jara, a doctor by profession, is widely known for her social media activism.

Chief Coordinator: Nasiruddin Patwary

  • A Dhaka University marketing graduate, Patwary gained attention in 2020 for staging a sit-in protest against border killings.

Joint Coordinator: Abdul Hannan Masud

Chief Organizer (Southern Region): Hasnat Abdullah

  • An English student at Dhaka University, Hasnat Abdullah will oversee party activities in the southern region.
  • Served as the convener of ADSM and staged a hunger strike against corruption at Dhaka University.
  • Gained recognition for his speeches and leadership before and after the July uprising.

Chief Organizer (Northern Region): Sarjis Alam

  • A Zoology student at Dhaka University, Sarjis Alam has been appointed as the chief organizer for the northern region.
  • A skilled debater and former student leader, he actively participated in ADSM.
  • Detained alongside other coordinators during the July 2024 protests.

The Jatiya Nagorik Party’s leadership reflects a new wave of youth activism in Bangladesh, with members who have been at the forefront of major student movements and policy advocacy.
