UNHCR Chief Calls for Renewed Global Efforts on Rohingya Crisis
Visiting United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi expressed hope that the international community would refocus its efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
He was optimistic that the proposed UN conference, initiated by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus, would generate the necessary momentum for meaningful global action. Grandi shared these remarks during a meeting with Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the latter’s office, as stated in a ministry press release on Thursday.
During the discussion, the foreign adviser extended his gratitude to the high commissioner for his visit to Bangladesh and acknowledged the UN’s continued support for the Rohingya refugees. He emphasized the critical role of UNHCR and the international community in finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
Touhid also expressed concerns that failing to secure a sustainable resolution could further destabilize regional peace and security.
The UNHCR high commissioner is scheduled to visit the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Friday.
