Trump says Iran is in talks with the U.S. and suggests ‘we’ll see if a deal can be reached

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Iran was engaged in negotiations with the United States, even as the Islamic Republic’s army chief warned Washington against carrying out military strikes.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said Iran was “talking to us” and added, “we’ll see if we can do something—otherwise we’ll see what happens,” noting that the United States had deployed a “big fleet” to the region. He reiterated that negotiations were under way.

Trump also said Washington was not sharing details of any potential strike plans with its regional allies for security reasons. “We can’t tell them the plan. If I told them the plan, it would be almost as bad as telling you—maybe worse,” he said.

The US president has previously threatened intervention in Iran following a deadly crackdown on anti-government protests. Meanwhile, Washington has deployed a naval strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier off Iran’s coast.
