The NBR has been dissolved, with a new ordinance establishing two separate divisions in its place.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has been dissolved and replaced with two new divisions under an ordinance approved by the interim government on Thursday.

The Advisory Council endorsed the draft of the Revenue Policy and Revenue Management (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which scraps the NBR as the central tax authority and establishes two separate divisions in its place.

The approval came at the council’s 39th meeting, held at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Dhaka with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus presiding.

The two new entities are the Revenue Policy Division and the Revenue Management Division. The restructuring aims to modernise tax administration and strengthen revenue collection by separating policy formulation from operational management.

Earlier, on 12 May, an ordinance was issued to abolish the NBR and split it into the two divisions. Since then, NBR officials and staff have been staging protests for more than six weeks, demanding that reforms be carried out in a more inclusive and rational manner.
