The interim government has given in-principle approval to establish Dhaka Central University, a centralised institution for the capital’s seven public colleges.

In a notification issued Tuesday, the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the education ministry said the decision aims to address the legitimate demands of students.

According to the notice, completing the process will take additional time. Authorities have already begun reviewing and refining the draft ordinance for the proposed university, drawing on feedback from students, teachers, academics and civil society.

The Division had invited online feedback on the draft ordinance on 24 September and has since received around 5,000 responses. It also carried out physical surveys and held three stakeholder meetings on the draft and the proposed university, the notification stated.

Students presented three key arguments for establishing a dedicated university: improving academic standards, ensuring timely examinations, and guaranteeing prompt publication of results.

Dhaka Central University would incorporate seven public colleges in the capital: Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Bangla College, Government Titumir College, and Shaheed Suhrawardy College.
