The Chief Justice has stated that Bangladesh's judiciary is undergoing significant structural reforms

Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed today highlighted the shared commitment of Bangladesh and Turkey to justice, human rights, and the rule of law, despite their distinct historical and cultural constitutional paths. Speaking at a special session in Istanbul commemorating the 63rd anniversary of Turkey’s Constitutional Court, he emphasized that both nations pursue common objectives rooted in constitutional values.

Representing the judiciary of Bangladesh, Dr. Ahmed extended warm greetings to the people of Turkey and its constitutional institutions, particularly the Constitutional Court. He described the celebration not merely as a historical occasion, but as a reaffirmation of a collective commitment to constitutionalism and justice. Underscoring the need for constitutions to have a tangible impact on the everyday lives of citizens, he advocated for a more accessible, transparent, and inclusive judicial process.

Drawing from Bangladesh’s own experience, he noted the proactive role of the higher judiciary through suo moto interventions and public interest litigation, which have significantly advanced the rights of marginalized communities. On a global scale, he called for constitutional courts to broaden their perspectives to address emerging challenges such as climate justice, digital rights, AI regulation, and transnational inequalities. Addressing fellow jurists and legal scholars, Dr. Ahmed shared that his visit coincides with a period of extensive judicial reform in Bangladesh, expressing hope that the country could benefit from Turkey’s experience in enhancing judicial cooperation. He concluded by expressing sincere gratitude to the Turkish Constitutional Court for their invitation and hospitality, and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s dedication to strengthening bilateral ties. Following the event, the Chief Justice is scheduled to attend an international conference in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
