Shakil Becomes Youngest to Conquer ‘Sea to Summit Everest’ Milestone

At 6:45 am Bangladesh time, Ikramul Hasan Shakil completed his historic "Sea to Summit" expedition, according to a source from 8Kexpeditions, his gear partner, who informed The Daily Star. On February 25, 2025, Shakil began his journey by walking from Cox's Bazar to the summit of Mount Everest. Born on April 17, 1994, he covered approximately 1,300 kilometers in 90 days, becoming the youngest and fastest person to complete this route—a significant milestone for Bangladesh. With a mission to raise awareness about reducing single-use plastic pollution and lowering carbon emissions, Shakil sometimes walked alongside friends and fellow adventurers. He started from Cox's Bazar, reached Dhaka after 12 days, and on March 9 held a press conference in Dhaka to share his plans and call for sponsors to support the costly expedition, noting that the Everest climbing permit alone costs \$15,000.

After reorganizing for a few days, Shakil resumed his trek from Sayedabad in mid-March, joined by fellow adventurers. His arduous journey took him through Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, covering the demanding 1,300-kilometer route before finally ascending Everest, which rises 29,031 feet. His goal was to break the record set by Australian mountaineer Tim Macartney, who in 1990 took over three months to walk from Ganga Sagar, India, to Everest’s summit.

The expedition was organized by the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC), with support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Makalu E-Traders Nepal, and Systema Toothbrush as associate sponsors. Shakil had previously made history as the first Bangladeshi to complete Nepal’s 1,700-kilometer Great Himalaya Trail, a feat achieved by only 33 climbers worldwide.
