Bangladesh Cannot Shoulder Another Rohingya Influx: National Security Adviser
National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman stated today that Bangladesh is in no position to absorb another wave of Rohingya refugees, urging the Arakan Army to prevent further displacement of Rohingyas within Myanmar's Rakhine State.
“Bangladesh does not want to face another refugee influx. It simply cannot bear the burden,” he said during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy this afternoon.
Dr Khalilur, who also serves as the Chief Adviser’s special envoy on Rohingya issues, noted that a significant number of Rohingyas fled Rakhine amid escalating conflict between the Arakan Army and Myanmar military forces from 2023 to late 2024.
"While the numbers have since decreased, Rohingyas have continued to cross into Bangladesh," he added.
The security adviser said Dhaka is working closely with relevant stakeholders to avert a renewed wave of refugees entering the country.
“Bangladesh has made it clear to the Arakan Army that they must put an end to violence, discrimination, and displacement of Rohingyas within Rakhine,” he said.
Dr Khalilur emphasized that the Arakan Army is obligated to abide by international law, including humanitarian law.
“The world is paying close attention. Future engagement with them will hinge not only on their actions to protect Rohingyas but also on ensuring proper representation of the Rohingya community,” he said.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir were also present at the briefing.
