Rizwana says the government will enhance policy measures to better support and uplift the Munda community

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said today that the government is prepared to work sincerely on any policy support or environmental initiative that can bring tangible improvements to the lives of the Munda community.

“Even if we cannot solve all their problems immediately, we can at least begin the journey toward meaningful solutions,” she said while speaking virtually at a programme titled “National Sharing Meeting: From Impact to Action – Mainstreaming Climate Resilience for the Munda Community,” held at a city hotel.

Rizwana described the Munda community as one of Bangladesh’s most climate-vulnerable groups. Their traditions, nature-based livelihoods and limited socioeconomic capacity are becoming increasingly fragile due to the impacts of climate change, she noted.

“Despite your deep relationship with nature, you (the Munda community) are now among the worst affected by climate fragility, water scarcity, land insecurity and health risks,” the adviser said.

She also expressed regret that the customary rights of the Munda community are often overlooked, with their access to forests and natural resources restricted.

“We remain committed to taking practical steps that respect your needs, traditional lifestyles and rights,” she added.

The meeting—chaired by Breaking the Silence President and Dainik Ittefaq Editor Tasmima Hossain—was also attended by Department of Social Services Director General Md Saidur Rahman and Suradhani Munda, President of the Munda Community’s Self Help group.

Speakers stressed the need to improve the living standards of the Munda community, safeguard their rights, ensure their role in the equitable use of natural resources and strengthen their resilience to climate change.
