Polling in Sherpur-3 has been suspended after the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.

The election in the Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency has been suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated parliamentary candidate and district Jamaat secretary Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal (51).

Returning Officer and District Commissioner Tarfadar Mahmudur Rahman confirmed the development on Wednesday morning (4 February). He said Article 17(1) of the law provides that if a “validly nominated” candidate dies after the withdrawal deadline and before polling day, the election in the concerned constituency must be cancelled immediately.

Accordingly, he added, preparations are underway to issue a public notice formally suspending the electoral process. Once the notice is finalised, it will be announced, and a fresh election schedule for the constituency will be set at a later date.

Nuruzzaman Badal died early Wednesday, passing away around 1:30am while undergoing treatment for kidney complications at Swadesh Hospital in Mymensingh, said Sherpur district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Md Hafizur Rahman. He added that Badal had been suffering from kidney-related ailments for a long time.
