Humayra Sultana has been appointed as the first female Managing Director and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines

The government on Tuesday appointed Humayra Sultana, an additional secretary at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, as the new managing director (MD) and chief executive officer (CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd.

With this appointment, she becomes the first woman to hold the top executive posts of the national flag carrier.

An order issued by the ministry’s Biman-1 wing said Humayra will assume the MD and CEO roles in addition to her current responsibilities and will continue in the positions until a full-time official is appointed.

Meanwhile, the government has cancelled the contract of outgoing MD Shafiqur Rahman following his imprisonment over allegations of abusing his domestic worker.

Shafiqur and his wife were arrested on Monday in a case filed by the worker’s father a day earlier. A Dhaka court later rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.
