Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday urged the Special Security Force (SSF) to maintain a balance between ensuring the security of the head of government and preserving close ties with the public, stressing that the trust and affection of the people remain his greatest source of strength.

Addressing a programme marking the 40th founding anniversary of the SSF at Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, he said security measures should not create a gap between elected leaders and the citizens they serve.

“As head of government, my greatest strength comes from the trust and love of the people,” he said. “I therefore urge the SSF, as a highly professional force, to ensure that security arrangements do not distance the Prime Minister from the people.”

The Prime Minister observed that security challenges have become increasingly complex due to evolving socio-economic, political and geopolitical realities, alongside rapid technological advancements. He emphasised the need for continuous training, professional excellence and the adoption of modern security strategies to address these challenges effectively.

Tarique Rahman noted that the SSF often faces the difficult responsibility of safeguarding the Prime Minister during large public gatherings and state events while ensuring minimal disruption to normal civic life and public convenience.

Commending the force for carrying out its duties efficiently under such circumstances, he reiterated the importance of balancing security requirements with democratic accessibility.

He also called on SSF personnel to treat ordinary citizens with respect while performing their duties.

“While giving the highest priority to the security of important personalities, you must remain vigilant to ensure that members of the public are not subjected to any form of misconduct,” he said.

Highlighting the qualities expected of the elite force, the Prime Minister stressed professionalism, discipline, integrity, loyalty and strict adherence to the chain of command.

He further underscored the importance of close coordination among security agencies, intelligence services and government institutions to strengthen national security.

Expressing confidence in the force, Tarique Rahman said he hoped SSF members would continue to discharge their responsibilities with patriotism, professionalism and respect for democratic values.
