Sarjis Alam, the principal organizer (northern region) of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has said that his party has no objection to the next general election being held in April next year, provided that key reforms are implemented beforehand.

“We have no issue with the election taking place in April, as long as there is visible progress in initiating trials and implementing basic reforms in the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, and the Election Commission,” he told reporters at Chowrangi crossing on Monday, according to BSS.

Reflecting on past elections, Sarjis said they witnessed the abuse of power and the influence of black money. He stressed the need for a level playing field ahead of the polls.

“We hope all political parties—big or small—will be given equal opportunities and allowed to contest the election freely,” he added.

Sarjis also emphasized that power should not be used to victimize anyone. “We do not want to see any more polling centre takeovers or ballot paper thefts in the future,” he said.

He urged the interim government to demonstrate professionalism by carrying out necessary reforms in law enforcement, the Election Commission, and the judiciary.

NCP’s southern region principal organizer Hasnat Abdullah and Panchagarh Sadar Upazila coordinator Tanbirul Bari Nayon were also present during the event.

Earlier, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah exchanged Eid greetings with party leaders and activists.
