The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today said that justice has been served through the death sentence handed down to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina for crimes against humanity.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the remarks at a press conference at the party chairperson’s office in Ghulshan following a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee.

In a written statement, Mirza Fakhrul said, “This verdict has delivered justice. The maximum punishment under the law has been imposed on Sheikh Hasina and her associate, former home minister Asaduzzaman Kamal. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received a reduced five-year prison term for cooperating with the judicial process.”

He added, “The souls of the thousands who were killed—victims of 16 years of enforced disappearances, murders, extrajudicial killings, and the state violence during the 2024 student uprising—will find some solace. Their families’ long-held anguish will also be eased to some extent.”

“It was the expectation of both the Bangladeshi people and the global community that the ousted dictator and her collaborators would be tried for crimes against humanity, brutal killings, and acts of genocide,” he said.

“Today, after a lengthy judicial process conducted by the International Crimes Tribunal in line with international standards, the verdict against Sheikh Hasina and her two associates has been delivered,” Fakhrul noted.

Mirza Fakhrul reaffirmed the BNP’s commitment to establishing the rule of law and justice, urging citizens to remain vigilant. He also called for fair trials in all other pending cases.

BNP Standing Committee members Salahuddin Ahmed, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain were also present at the briefing.
